On Saturday April 27, 2019, the second annual OM FEST takes place on the Lawn at Downtown Summerlin.  Practitioners of Kundalini yoga, Baptiste yoga, Vinyasa yoga, Pranayama principles and more will all be in one place, to showcase the expansive love that yoga brings to our beautiful valley.

I’ve spent a long time looking.  A long time is relative; someone else’s may look different. For me, my long time started as a small child at the foot of my mother’s guru in a large meditation hall. The lights were low as his baritone voice chanted Om Namah Shivaya. That sound and vibration is one I have been looking for ever since.

Fast forward forty years, and I found myself standing outside of RYK studios on a weekday afternoon, nose pressed to the glass trying to figure out why the door was locked in the middle of the day.  A friend at work saw a mala of Rudraksha beads around my neck, peaking from beneath the collar of my scrubs and asked if I did yoga. Well, I did, but only in the confines of my bedroom. She recommended RYK emphatically, explaining that there wasn’t anything like Kundalini Yoga, I should give it a try.

Realizing the center is open in the morning and then again in the evening, I walked away determined to come back.  If only to check out some of the cool things I saw through the window. When I did return, I came ready for class.

Stepping in, felt like stepping back in time to the meditation hall of my childhood.  RYK is not just a yoga studio or a meditation center. There is something more.

Kundalini yoga is something that combines the exhaustive physical with calming meditation.  It was the missing piece that I had been looking for — working my physical body until I was able to settle down and be still.  I was finally able to meditate the way mother had always pushed me to.
